TRISHNA GURUNG
for Earth Hour 2008 I’ve been from Sydney, Australia to Atlanta, USA.
In the best way possible I’ve been in the thick of things, shuffling images and video of Earth Hour from one corner of the world to another. It’s been a global effort to employ the most amazing technological tools to connect the dots on climate change, the greatest threat that faces the planet.
From what I’ve seen in the past 24 hours as Earth Hour rolled around the world, an event has became a movement that captured the imagination of people. It’s obvious that that Earth Hour has found an audience.
You.
You chose to switch off for 60 minutes and turn on to the reality that this planet of ours is in real danger.
You made the political personal once again. And how! I saw you put up homemade flyers around the neighborhood. I heard you gasp when the city did go darker than you thought possible. There was a sigh when the big lights faded to the shimmer of starlight. You were there sitting in the crowd outside the cathedral in New Zealand. You partied with the celebs Down Under, waded in the shallows as warriors lit the surf with their torches in Fiji , danced with the parade in Bangkok, and dined in old world candlelit splendor in Ireland. You made the individual, Earth Hour and climate change part of the news agenda.
You know what I got out of working backstage?
It’s a big world out there.
Hundreds of cities.
Thousands of us.
One small, fragile planet.
Our responsibility.

Great idea although I disagree with the pseudosciene that claims that climate change is a threat. I took part simply because (1) it helps pollution, and (2) it conserves the oil reserves left in the earth which really are going to run out eventually, that does seem true. But global warming, no! Not a threat! NOT something we can do one thing about. Listen to scientists on global warming--not journalists like Al Gore and politicians like Al Gore. Learn about the actual SCIENCE. But again, a great idea for other vital reasons. ...June Cheatwood/Norfolk, Virginia/USA
we turned of our light in winnipeg but as we walked down the road we saw lots of light, we saw on guy standing outside his house and there was lots of light on in the house. we asked him to participate in earth hour but he said "we havae a 2 year old, she wont understand" we said back to him "we have a 2 year old to and she understands!" but he still wouldnt listen. If everyone just turned off there lights for a hour, just one hour...the world wold change alot.
Not only did my husband and I participate in Earth Hour last night but we also discovered how romantic candlelight and no distractions (tv, laptops, etc.) can be. We sat together and chatted until after 9PM (we lost track of time). I hope to spread the word more next year about this event and possibly organize something in our neighborhood.
It's so simple to particpate in this event and contribute to something so important....just turn out the lights and electricity for one hour. There's really no excuse not to.
